Flying when pregnant: useful tips for travelling by plane

Flying has become an increasingly common part of modern life. But what should you do when you’re expecting? Here is a practical guide including our advice for flying whilst pregnant, risk-free.
 
First of all, it is a good idea to check with your family doctor and gynaecologist if there are conditions for travelling by plane. If your pregnancy is going as planned and without complications, physiologically speaking, you can fly with us up to your 36th week without any need for a certificate from a specialist (for more information, take a look at our dedicated section). In case of twin or multiple pregnancies, however, you can fly with us up to the end of your 28th week.
 
Some airlines require a certificate of fitness to fly from as early as the 28th week, so we recommend having it to hand for connecting flights (preferably in English).
 
Regardless of your gestation period, it is nonetheless good practice to take a few precautions. Here are our tips for flying whilst pregnant:
 
Always let our Sales Centre know if you are going through a twin or multiple pregnancy, or if you’re having complications.
Choose comfortable, light clothes for your trip. Due to the increased risk of thrombosis during pregnancy, we recommend wearing compression stockings on the plane to encourage proper circulation.
Fasten your seatbelt underneath your belly, lower than usual (as you would in a car), and without tightening it too much.
Once the plane is in the air, try to move around a little, taking a few minutes to walk up and down the aisle every half hour. When seated, remember to make circular movements with your feet and toes, and avoid crossing your legs.
Drink plenty of water (avoiding carbonated drinks if possible) is always a good idea, but especially when flying.
