Pisa is a Tuscan jewel that is often underrated. Aside from the most famous architectural aberration in the world, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the city offers many exceptional sights along with a lively old town bustling with students. Strolling through the narrow streets or enjoying the view from one of the many small pavement cafés, you get a real glimpse of everyday life in this university city. The area between Via Santa Maria and Borgo Stretto, especially, is a haven for shoppers. In addition to great markets and sightseeing, Italian beach culture can also be experienced during a trip to Pisa. The nearest beach, Marina di Pisa, is only 10 km from the former lagoon city.
If you have a few more days to spare, Pisa is the ideal base for exploring the wonders of the Tuscan countryside. Alongside iconic destinations such as Lucca, Volterra and San Gimignano, there is the Vespa town of Pontedera, the Cittàslow San Miniato, and the marble cliffs of Carrara. Whatever your preference, our recommendations will ensure that you don’t miss a single sight or local speciality.
