The Graz Museum of Modern Art

Wonder, amazement, and admiration, these are the sensations that welcome visitors to the famous museum of modern art in Graz, the Kunsthaus: a mysterious combination of steel and glass that offers a unique contrast with the roofs of the historic centre. After admiring the charm of the Baroque palaces and Renaissance-style courtyards of the Austrian city, you will be taken on a journey beneath the banner of modern and contemporary art.

The Kunsthaus Graz is located on the right bank of the Mura river and has also been renamed the friendly alien, due to its bizarre shape: the bubble is made using over a thousand Plexiglas elements, which are illuminated in the evening, an unmissable show. The structure was built inspired by the principles of Blobism, a contemporary architectural movement in which the buildings have soft and swollen curves and shapes.

Kunsthaus Graz was designed by architects Colin Fournier and Peter Cook and was inaugurated in 2003, the year the city was named European Capital of Culture. Since then, the building has become one of its futuristic symbols, a destination for visitors from all over the world.

What to see inside the Kunsthaus Graz

The Kunsthaus Graz floats as if it were a blue bubble suspended between the roofs, hosting art exhibitions every day: inside, there is a section dedicated to modern works of the last fifty years, as well as a restaurant, a media lounge and Camera Austria, the organization that runs an important photography magazine. The Museum presents an ever-changing program of art exhibitions, which allows you to admire the works of the most famous Austrian artists and innovation present on the international scene.

Entering this alien-looking structure, it is possible to climb inside the Travelator, the escalator that leads visitors to the heart of the building, a large area that has been set up with all kinds of cutting-edge exhibitions and displays. After admiring the evocative works on display, you can relax while enjoying with coffee inside the Needle, the elevated panoramic glass platform, from which you can glimpse the skyline of the city.

Among the things to see in Graz is the interior of the Kunsthaus, which is illuminated by a maze of portholes, all facing north except one, which faces east. This frames the Clock Tower, which is set in a modern frame and is the symbol of the city.
