In the heart of Munich, Marienplatz is one of the most iconic squares in Germany; a melting pot of history, culture and tradition. Dominated by the majestic neo-Gothic façade of the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall), this square is famous for a unique attraction that captivates visitors from all over the world: the Rathaus-Glockenspiel. This mechanical clock offers a timeless musical and visual spectacle every day.

A journey through history: the origins of the Rathaus-Glockenspiel

The Glockenspiel, located in the clock tower of the Neues Rathaus, was installed in 1908 as part of the construction of the imposing municipal building. With its 43 bells and 32 life-sized figures, the Glockenspiel is one of the largest in Europe and recalls crucial historical events in the city.

The animated scenes unfold in two acts: the first represents the marriage of Duke William V to Renata of Lorraine, which took place in 1568. It is accompanied by a re-enactment of the traditional ‘Coopers’ Dance’ (Schäfflertanz), a symbol of rebirth after the plague that struck the city in the 16th century. The second act features the coopers dancing in a circle, an ancient Bavarian tradition that celebrates the city’s indomitable and joyful spirit.

Music and magic: the sound of the Glockenspiel

Every day at 11 a.m. and 12 noon (and at 5 p.m. during the summer months), the Glockenspiel comes to life, accompanied by the sound of bells that produce enchanting melodies. The complex mechanical system that animates the figures and music faithfully retains its original design, evoking the atmosphere of a bygone era. The melodies played change with the seasons, making the experience unique throughout the year.

Marienplatz: a vibrant heart between past and present

Marienplatz is much more than just a backdrop for the Rathaus-Glockenspiel. The square has been the centre of public life in Munich for over eight centuries.

Today, Marienplatz serves as a crossroads between history and modernity, surrounded by historic buildings and lively cafés. It’s the perfect starting point for exploring Munich. From here, visitors can easily reach Frauenkirche church, with its iconic twin towers, or indulge in shopping along the nearby Kaufingerstraße.
