Spritz time
Spritz is a hallowed ritual for the Venetians – and tourists soon learn to follow suit. White wine, Aperoland a dash of seltz are the basic ingredients, while measures depend on different schools of thought.
Every day from 5 o’clock on the lagoons bars and osterias are intent on serving Spritz with generous quantities of finger foods – not to be missed.
This is the most popular recipe:
1/5 Aperol
3/5 wine
1/5 seltz
Ice and a slice of orange.
The liveliest spots for bars and osterias are around Campo Santa Margherita in the Dorsoduro district and along the Fondamenta degli Ormesini and Fondamenta della Misericordia in the Canareggio area.
Some of the most popular are: Dogado, along Strada Nuova, serving not only spritz but also their own recipe cocktails – perhaps relaxing in one of the rocking chairs in the roof terrace garden; Harry's Bar near St Mark’s is a well-known temple of the international jet set, and lastly, Campo Santa Margherita has Margaret Duchamp, with tables allowing Venetians and tourists alike to enjoy a chat and a drink well into the small hours.
