Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is the largest airport in Germany and one of the main air transport hubs in Europe. Located approximately 12 km from the city center of Frankfurt am Main, it also serves as the primary operational base for Lufthansa. The airport covers an extensive area and consists of two main passenger terminals (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2) connected by internal transport systems. It features four runways, making it one of the busiest airports in Europe in terms of both passenger traffic and cargo operations.
Its structure is designed like a true “airport city,” with integrated railway connections, shopping areas, hotels, and business services located directly within the terminal complex.
How to reach Frankfurt Airport
Train: the fastest and most recommended option
The rail connection is the most efficient way to reach the airport.
- The S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 connect Frankfurt city center directly to the airport in approximately 10–15 minutes. The station, Frankfurt Flughafen Regionalbahnhof, is located directly beneath Terminal 1, making access extremely convenient. Trains run at very high frequency, often every 10 minutes during peak hours.
- The S-Bahn Rhein-Main network is integrated into the regional transport system and also provides easy access from nearby cities such as Mainz, Wiesbaden, and Darmstadt.
In addition, the Fernbahnhof long-distance station connects the airport to major German cities via high-speed ICE trains, including Berlin, Munich, Cologne, and Hamburg.
By car: motorway access
The airport is well connected to Germany’s motorway network:
- From the north: A5 motorway toward Frankfurt, exit “Flughafen”
- From the south: A67, then A5 toward Frankfurt
- From the east: A3 via the Frankfurter Kreuz interchange
- From the west: A66, then A3 toward the airport
Within the airport area, there are multiple parking options:
- Short-stay parking for brief visits
- Long-stay parking connected by shuttle services
- Business parking with direct terminal access
Car rental services are also widely available, with offices located directly inside the terminals.
Bus and local connections
Several bus lines connect the airport with surrounding districts and cities in the Rhine-Main region. However, buses are generally less used by passengers compared to trains and cars, as they are slower and less direct.
Terminal structure and orientation
The airport is organized in a clear and functional layout:
- Terminal 1: the largest and oldest terminal, divided into concourses A, B, C, and Z
- Terminal 2: mainly used by international airlines outside the Star Alliance network
- Internal connection via SkyLine, a free automated train system
Navigation is supported by:
- Multilingual information screens
- A dedicated airport mobile app
- Clear signage and relatively short internal transfer times despite the airport’s size
