Ancona

Ancona (100,000 inhabitants) is the capital of the province of the same name in the Marches region. Inland, the province is bordered by the mountains Monte Catria and Monte Strega, and at the Adriatic coast the rivers Cesano and Musone form its natural borders. Ancona is one of the Marches’ most important economic centres and the largest town in the region, both in terms of the number of inhabitants and geographical size. Since its foundation (387 BC) the town benefited from a natural harbour to which it owes its location on a promontory in the shape of an elbow (ankòn in Greek) and the broad bay. Today Ancona consists of two parts: the historic town centre on the hill (the Monte Guasco) and the modern part of the town by the sea. The most important sights are at the former strategic points from which impressive panoramas open up: the Cathedral at the tip of the promontory, the Arch of Trajan (Arco di Traiano) and the Lazzaretto in the harbour, the old lighthouse and the citadel on the hill descending steeply into the sea, and the memorial to those who died in the First World War on the cliffs on the opposite side of the hill of the city. Most of the other sites are situated on the harbourside. Although the buildings of the town reflect all periods of history, from the Romans to modern day, the predominant buildings date back to the period of free communities in the 14 century and from the 18 century. In addition to the historic buildings and artistic monuments there are many other surprises: the famous paper industry in the area around Fabriano, the grottos of Frasassi and Genga, the cities of Jesi, Arcevia, Sassoferrato, Camerano, Loreto, Corinaldo, Osimo, Castelleone di Suasa, Senigallia, Sirolo and Numana, and the ancient villages, towers and farms, as well as all the culinary specialities such as stockfish and the fish soup Brodetto all’Anconetana.
