Pisa

Every year millions of holiday makers admire Pisa’s famous landmark and ignore the rest of the town (88,000 inhabitants) near the mouth of the River Arno.  And yet, this cheerful student city offers much to be discovered: magnificent monuments, tranquil gardens, inviting Piazzas, arcade lined streets and elegant shops. The key to understanding the splendour of Pisa is in the medieval period: Then, the fleet of the seagoing republic ruled the Mediterranean and was able to increase its wealth virtually without hindrance. The Piazza dei Cavalieri was the centre of worldly power. The Palazzo dei Cavalieri painted with impressive sgrafitto was radically altered by Giorgio Vasari in 1562 and is now the seat of the elite university Scuola Normale Superiore. The adjacent Palazzo dell’Orologio (Clock’s Palace) was built in 1605 incorporating two derelict towers, one of them the famous “hunger tower”, in which a proud Governor was imprisoned in 1288 and starved to death.
